Case Description
On the evening of June 3, 2024, in Moscow on Manezhnaya Square, two women - 28-year-old Anastasia Lysenkova and 55-year-old Vera Nikolaeva - used a spray can with red aerosol paint to write "GUR" on the pedestal of a monument erected in honor of the 50th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War. They were detained immediately. During the interrogation, the women explained that they did this 'on the order of Ukrainian fraudsters,' who allegedly promised them a large sum of money. Despite the fact that the inscription was erased and there were no traces left of it, criminal cases were initiated against the women for the destruction or damage of military graves, as well as monuments, steles, obelisks, other memorial structures or objects that perpetuate the memory of those who died in defense of the Fatherland or its interests, or dedicated to the days of military glory of Russia, committed by a group or in a preliminary conspiracy. The next day, on June 4, the Tverskoy District Court of Moscow sent both women under arrest." On June 26, 2024, when considering the appeal, the Moscow City Court mitigated the measure of restraint and released the Muscovites under house arrest. On August 26, 2024, the Tverskoy District Court of Moscow found the defendants in the case guilty and sentenced both to one year of compulsory labor. Before the verdict comes into force, the women were taken under a written undertaking not to leave. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
