Case Description
In July 2023, the Volgograd Region Prosecutor’s Office opened a criminal case against Alena Agafonova, a 23-year-old resident of Samara, for desecrating burial sites. According to law enforcement officials, Agafonova “committed cynical acts that flouted moral and ethical norms” at Mamayev Kurgan: she posted an Instagram Story in which she “tickles” the breast of the “Motherland Calls” monument and hums a cheerful tune.
Agafonova managed to leave Russia and spent several months abroad. She was placed on a wanted list.
In February 2024, Alena Agafonova was detained at an airport upon her arrival in Russia, transported to Volgograd, and subsequently sent to a pretrial detention center. The charges were escalated—the blogger was accused of “rehabilitating Nazism” for “desecrating symbols of Russia’s military glory.”
On April 5, 2024, the Volgograd Regional Court found Alena Agafonova guilty and sentenced her to 10 months of corrective labor, with 10% of her earnings to be withheld as state revenue. The court also banned Agafonova from administering online resources for two years.
The verdict was not appealed and became final.
