Case Description
In Elista on April 12, 2022, at his workplace in the building of the city administration, security forces detained local resident Altan Ochirov. According to the investigation, he ran the Telegram channel 'Volny Ulus' (about 570 subscribers) from a work computer, in which he criticized the actions of Russian military personnel on Ukrainian territory and in one of the publications allegedly spread false information about the number of casualties. A criminal case was initiated against Ocharovany on charges of spreading "fakes" about the Russian army motivated by political hatred, committed by a group of individuals in a premeditated conspiracy. On April 13, 2022, the activist was sent to a pre-trial detention center. October 18, 2022, the Elista City Court of the Republic of Kalmykia found Altana Ochirov guilty and sentenced him to 3 years in a general regime colony. December 23, 2022, the Supreme Court of the Republic of Kalmykia increased the punishment: sentenced to imprisonment for a term of 5 years with deprivation of the right to hold positions in the civil service and local self-government bodies for 3 years.
