Case Description
On March 12, 2025, a criminal case was initiated in Moscow for the dissemination of "fakes" about the Russian army on the grounds of political hatred against economist and former associate professor of the Higher School of Economics Alexei Zakharov. According to the investigation, Zakharov published anti-war posts on Facebook about the actions of the Russian army in Bucha. The details of the charges are unknown. Zakharov himself left Russia immediately after the start of the war. On March 19, 2025, the investigation chose a measure of restraint for him in the form of a written undertaking not to leave. On May 12, 2025, he was placed on the international wanted list. On May 14, 2025, the Cheremushkinsky District Court of Moscow placed Alexei Zakharov under arrest in absentia from the moment of his actual detention or extradition to the Russian Federation.
