Case Description
In the city of Berezovsky, Sverdlovsk Oblast, early in the morning on March 11, 2022, an unknown person threw a Molotov cocktail at the military enlistment office building on Revolutionary Street. The fire was quickly extinguished by a female security guard and DPS officers who were patrolling the city and happened to be nearby. The wooden building was almost undamaged. Opposite the entrance to the military enlistment office, a pacific painted with orange paint remained on the fence. Alexey Rozhkov, a 24-year-old local resident, was immediately detained on charges of arson. He confessed to everything: he stated that he decided to set the fire to help the soldiers who found themselves at the front against their will. Initially, a case against Rozhkov was opened under the article on attempted murder committed with particular cruelty by a generally dangerous method out of hooligan motives, since a security guard was in the local military enlistment office building, and Rozhkov, as the investigation claimed, knew about it. The man was sent to a pre-trial detention center. Later, the charge was reclassified to attempted intentional destruction of another's property, and the measure of restraint was changed from arrest to a written undertaking not to leave. Being under house arrest, in December 2022 Rozhkov managed to leave for Kyrgyzstan, but in May 2023 unknown individuals kidnapped him from Bishkek and returned him to the Sverdlovsk region and again sent him to a pre-trial detention center. In the fall, the case was reclassified as committing a terrorist act. September 26, 2023, it became known that another case was opened against the man - for justifying terrorism. According to the investigation, Rozhkov made a repost on VKontakte of his interview with the Khodorkovsky LIVE project, in which he called the arson of the military enlistment office a "correct act in need of support and imitation, and the actions of the Russian army against the population of Ukraine fascism and genocide. At the end of December, Rozhkova was additionally charged with another offense - spreading "fakes" about the Russian army, committed by a group of persons by prior conspiracy on grounds of political hatred, due to the same interview." In the opinion of the investigation, Rozhkov conspired with the hosts of the 'Khodorkovsky Live' channel, Elena Malakhovskaya and Renat Davletgildeev. The case materials against the anchors have been separated into a separate proceeding. Central District Military Court found Alexei Rozhkov guilty on May 20, 2025 and sentenced him to 16 years of imprisonment with the first 5 years to be served in prison, and the remaining term in a strict regime colony.
