Case Description
Alexey Efimenko, a 27-year-old local resident of the occupied Zaporizhzhia region's town of Mikhailovka, disappeared in June 2023. His relatives searched for him all over the city, but to no avail. That same evening, Alexei called them by phone and said that "they took him away." It turned out that he had been kidnapped by Russian security forces. The reason for which he was arrested, Alexei did not name. Relatives were allowed to take food and belongings to him weekly at the so-called 'Melitopol Commandant's Office,' where he was held for at least six months. Subsequently, a criminal case was opened against Yefimenko for espionage. The case is classified, the details of the charges are unknown. On August 6, 2024, the St. Petersburg City Court found Alexey Efimenko guilty and sentenced him to 7 years in a strict regime colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
