Case Description

In Yekaterinburg on August 22, 2023, at 19:52, a 48-year-old local resident, Alexey Belozersky, approached the military enlistment office building on Lenin Avenue with a white package in his hand. At that moment he was talking to someone on the phone. Then the man turned onto the adjacent street, walked about a block away, waited for passersby to pass, put on a balaclava, and went back to the military enlistment office. At 19:56, Belozersky lit two bottles with a Molotov cocktail and threw them towards the main entrance. The first one fell on the steps and caught fire, the second one crashed on the sidewalk. Belozersky threw the third bottle out the window onto Sheinkman Street. Ekaterinburg resident is said to have shouted 'Glory to Kraken!' during the arson. The building was not damaged, the fire was quickly extinguished by military enlistment office employees, who were helped by passers-by. After the arson, the Yekaterinburg resident changed clothes and went to work. After consulting with the company director, he himself went to the police and turned himself in. FSB officers took him from there. Belozersky was accused of committing a terrorist act. According to the security forces' version, the man acted on the orders of a representative of the intelligence and sabotage unit of the GUR of Ukraine. The man himself claims that he became a victim of fraudsters: he was "confused", he was "after a heart attack" and "did not understand what he was doing", he was tricked into taking several loans, and then convinced that the lost money could be returned if he set fire to the military enlistment office. For the duration of the investigation, the defendant was sent to a pre-trial detention center.
