Case Description
Russian soldiers abducted a 53-year-old local resident, Ukrainian citizen, head of the humanitarian policy department of the Kherson district state administration Alexander Zarivny from his home in the occupied city of Alyoshki, Kherson region, on March 17, 2022. The military threatened his wife and daughter with weapons and handcuffed the man and took him away in an unknown direction. Zarivny was in the detention center in Kherson for about four weeks, after which he was transferred to the pre-trial detention center No. 2 in Simferopol. At the end of December 2022, Zarivny was accused of espionage. According to the Russian investigation, the Ukrainian provided employees of the Security Service of Ukraine with information about the location and numbers of Russian troops in the Kherson region. In the winter of 2023, Alexander was sent for a stationary forensic psychiatric examination. November 29, 2023, the Kherson Regional Court found Alexander Zarivny guilty and sentenced him to 16 years in a strict regime colony. On March 21, 2024, the First Appellate Court of General Jurisdiction reduced the sentence to 13 years in a strict regime colony.
