Case Description

On August 26, 2023, in Bakhchisaray, Republic of Crimea, 23-year-old local resident Alexander Tyurenko was detained. According to law enforcement, the night before, while intoxicated, the resident of Bakhchisarai urinated on a monument with the symbols Z and V, dedicated to Russian military personnel participating in the special operation in Ukraine. The Crimean man filmed his actions on camera and then posted the recording online. A criminal case was opened against Tyurenko for vandalism "on the grounds of social enmity towards military personnel participating in the special military operation on the territory of Ukraine", and two days later the Bakhchisaray City Court sent him to a pre-trial detention center. On 3 November, the Supreme Court of the Republic of Crimea changed the measure of restraint to a ban on certain actions: the Bakhchisarai resident was prohibited from leaving the house from eight in the evening until seven in the morning, communicating with witnesses in the case, using a telephone and the Internet. The investigation also added a charge of vandalism for desecrating symbols of Russia's military glory and insulting the memory of the defenders of the Fatherland, committed online, due to the publication of a video. January 24, 2024, the Supreme Court of Crimea found Alexander Tyurenko guilty and sentenced him to two years of conditional imprisonment. In addition to the main punishment, he was also prohibited from posting materials on the internet for three years. The prosecutor's office challenged this decision. On April 9, 2024, the Third Appellate Court of General Jurisdiction replaced the suspended sentence with serving the sentence in a settlement colony.
