Case Description
Prior to February 2023 (the exact date is unknown), a criminal case was initiated in the occupied Luhansk region against 51-year-old Ukrainian citizen Oleksandr Sokolov on charges of espionage and public calls for extremist activities. According to Russian law enforcement, Sokolov, being opposed to the "special military operation, called in Telegram channels for "physical destruction of law enforcement officers" and "positively" commented on videos showing mockery of Russian military personnel." Also, from October 2022 to February 2023, Sokolov transmitted data on the movements and deployment locations of Russian servicemen, as well as the routes of military equipment columns in the republic, to Ukrainian special services via internet messengers. On September 24, 2024, the Supreme Court of the Luhansk People's Republic found Alexander Sokolovsky guilty and sentenced him to 16 years in prison to be served in a strict regime penal colony. There is no information about appealing the verdict.
