Case Description
On December 21, 2024, around 18:00 in Kolpino, St. Petersburg, an unknown man set fire to an ATM at a Sberbank branch on Lenin Avenue, d. The front panel of the ATM caught fire, no one was injured. On the same day, Alexander Nikiforov, a 70-year-old local resident and pensioner, was detained on charges of arson. During the interrogation, the man allegedly confessed to being involved in several arson incidents: it is claimed that between 13:50 and 15:20, he broke into the premises of three banks in Kolpino — JSC Alfa-Bank on Tverskaya Street, d. 34, AO "Gazprombank" on Tazayev Street, bldg. 7, and PAO Sberbank on Lenin Avenue, d. He was pouring flammable liquid on ATMs and setting them on fire. Explosions and fires occurred at "Alfa-Bank" and "Sberbank, while at "Gazprombank, Nikiforov was unable to carry out his plan due to circumstances beyond his control. In doing so, the pensioner acted on the instructions of scammers. A criminal case was initiated against Nikiforov for committing two terrorist attacks and one attempted terrorist attack. On December 23, 2024, the Kolpinsky District Court of St. Petersburg chose a measure of restraint for the case participant in the form of detention.
