Case Description

In annexed Crimea, in early May 2023, the FSB announced the detention of a "diversionary group of Ukrainian agents": Russian and Ukrainian citizens - 56-year-old Viktor Podvalny, 37-year-old Alexander Litvinenko, 35-year-old Sergey Krivoshein, 51-year-old Konstantin Yevmenenko, 50-year-old Igor Zorin, and 38-year-old Sergey Voynarovsky. Also detained was 43-year-old citizen of Ukraine and Bulgaria Denis Petrovanov. According to law enforcement, during a search of the detained individuals, 5 ready-to-use bombs, electric detonators, radio-controlled mechanisms, and tracking devices for surveillance were found. The detainees allegedly planned assassinations of "head of Crimea" Sergei Aksyonov, parliament speaker" Vladimir Konstantinov, and "mayor of Yalta" Yana Pavlenko. The defendants were accused of treason, preparation for a terrorist attack by a group of persons (Yevmenenko has two episodes of this charge), participation in a terrorist community and possession of explosive devices. All men were sent to the SIZO. On the embankment in Simferopol on May 30, 2023, the FSB detained 26-year-old local resident, master of sports in orienteering Kirill Baranik on suspicion of blowing up railway tracks in the Bakhchisaray district on February 23, 2023. According to the investigation, Kirill cut out a part of the rail, blocking train traffic. When Kirill was detained, a bag was put over his head and he was taken, presumably, to the special services department on Franco Boulevard for interrogation, where he was brutally beaten and tortured with electric current, forcing him to plead guilty. By that time, the FSB had already conducted more than two dozen searches, mainly in the homes of Crimean Tatars. The detention protocol was only drawn up by security forces the next day, on May 31. On the same day, the Kievsky District Court of Simferopol sent Kirill to a pre-trial detention center on charges of committing sabotage and storing explosives. On the night of June 5-6, Kirill was taken to the FSB office, where he was again tortured with electric current for 3-4 hours. This time, the security forces demanded that he confess to the sabotage of the railway near the village of Chistenkoye in the Simferopol district on May 18, when 5 grain wagons derailed from the tracks. Kirill refused to admit his involvement in this even under torture. On the night of June 9-10, Kirill was tortured again for six hours. In addition to torture, they threatened to kill him and his mother. In January 2024, Kirill Barannik was given a final charge, which was made more severe: the charge of sabotage on the railway was replaced with treason and participation in the activities of a terrorist organization. Moreover, it is unknown which "terrorist organization" is being referred to. In addition, Kirill was charged with illegal possession of ammunition." "On June 4, 2023, the Southern Military District Court found Konstantin Yevmenenko guilty and sentenced him to 10 years in a strict regime colony, with the first 2.5 years to be served in prison, 1 year of restricted freedom, and a fine of 500 thousand rubles. rubles. October 10, 2024, the Appellate Military Court upheld the verdict. On June 19, 2023, the Southern District Military Court found Alexander Litvinenko guilty and sentenced him to imprisonment for a term of 9 years 6 months in a strict regime colony with the first 2 years to be served in prison with a restriction of freedom for a period of 1 year 6 months and a fine of 500 thousand." rubles. October 31, 2024, the Appellate Military Court upheld the verdict.
