Case Description
Russian security forces detained 31-year-old local resident, Ukrainian citizen Oleksandr Korol, in occupied Makiivka, Donetsk Oblast, in September 2017. Since then, he has been held in pre-trial detention centers. He was accused of "espionage" and "participation in a terrorist community." According to Russian investigators, in 2014 "unidentified employees of the Ukrainian Security Service created a terrorist organization, into one of the structures of which Alexander Korol entered on the territory of the DNR." "According to the prosecution, in this community in 2017, Korol, in his free time from work, on the orders of an SBU employee, collected and transmitted to him information about the features of the location of checkpoints, created maps with the location of forward positions of military units and other military facilities in the area of the 'Oleksandrivka' checkpoint, as well as other secret information for its subsequent transmission to Ukrainian intelligence. August 14, 2024, the Southern Military Court found Alexander Korol guilty and sentenced him to 7 years in a general regime colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
