Case Description
In late July 2023, in Severodvinsk, Arkhangelsk Oblast, 76-year-old pensioner Alexander Butin was detained on suspicion of arson. According to the investigation, the man threw a Molotov cocktail at the military enlistment office and drove away in a car. The bottle hit the wall and only the grass caught fire. After the man's detention, security forces 'discovered correspondence with a curator' on his computer about 'accused of treason' being held in a building and that it 'needs to be burned down'. A criminal case was opened against Butin for attempted destruction of other people's property. During the investigation, he was taken into custody on his own recognizance. On July 22, 2024, the Severodvinsk City Court of the Arkhangelsk Region found Alexander Butin guilty and sentenced him to one and a half years of probation, one year of restriction of freedom, and 'compulsory supervision and treatment by a psychiatrist.' The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
